Ossi and the Ogre  By Richard R O’Neill

There once was a boy called Osiri who was known as Ossi for short. Ossi loved making music he was very noisy but not very tuneful.

One day he decided to make his own musical instrument, he wanted it to be loud and to be able to play all types of sounds.

He built it from a tree branch he found in the woods. He shaped it, put holes in it and fixed lots of things to it. Anything that made a good noise, an old piece of metal kitchen sink, some old metal bottle tops, a whistle and the bell off an old bicycle. He called it the ‘Vesh Django’. When he started to play it, Ossi thought people would be pleased, but instead they shouted ‘what an awful racket’ and ‘stop that at once.’

Ossi was puzzled it sounded really good to him, so why didn’t anyone else like it?

His best friend Tom told him that it was an interesting instrument but an awful sound. Ossi thanked him for being so honest, but Ossi still thought it was good.

His grandma said ‘it looks wonderful Ossi, but the sound is hurting my poor old ears.’ Ossi thanked her for being so honest, but Ossi still thought it was good.

Ossi’s musical instrument made such a racket that the even birds stopped landing in the trees nearby.

It was late spring and time for travelling. Ossi asked his granddad where they were going this year.

‘To Lancashire my boy’ he said, ‘lovely country air lots of good people who need the things we’ve been making, yes we shall do very well in Lancashire.’

When they set up camp under the trees on the edge of their farmer friend’s field, they made a fire and cooked tea. Afterwards Ossi started playing his musical instrument.

‘Oh goodness me’ said a farm worker ‘you don’t want to be playing that round here, if you wake the Ogre then you’ll be in trouble, he’ll chase you for miles.’

‘What’s the Ogre?’ asked Ossi, ‘The Ogre’ the farm worker explained ‘he’s like a monster that lives in a cave in the hills over there and he loves to sleep. Woe betide anyone who wakes him up. He chased the farmer on his tractor for three hours last week because he woke him up when he started ploughing the field next to the cave. He chases sheep too, in fact anyone or anything that wakes him up.’

When the rest of the family heard about this they told Ossi to be very careful playing his Vesh Django anywhere near the Ogre.

The next day Ossi was playing the Vesh Django in the hills; where he could play it as loud as he wanted without anyone complaining. His music echoed off the hills and sounded even louder.

Ossi heard what sounded like a gigantic a yawn coming from the cave is the side of the hill. He looked over and out of the cave came the biggest animal type thing he’d ever seen. Oh dear he thought it’s the Ogre I’ve gone and woken him up. Ossi was right he had woken the Ogre up.

The Ogre looked at Ossi and said in a huge booming voice.

‘You have just wokend me upped.’

Ossi said very nervously ‘Ye, ye yes I’m very s, s, sorry about that, it won’t happen again, I’m just got to go back for my tea if that’s Okkk ay?’

‘No its notted okayed boomed the ogre.’ Ossi was getting ready to run home.

The Ogre said ‘I want you to do that noisy again.’  Ossi said ‘noisy’? And realised that the Ogre wanted him to play his music again, so he did. As Ossi played the Vesh Django the ogre nodded his huge head in time to the music.

‘That stick thing has very niced soundings’ said the Ogre ‘Play it fastered pleeeese’

So Ossi played the Vesh Django faster and louder and the Ogre started to dance and sing in his huge Ogre voice.

The farmer and Ossi’s family had come up to see what all the noise was about. They were very surprised to see the Ogre singing and dancing to the sound of Ossi’s playing.

The next day the ogre came down to the farm and Ossi helped him to write a song to sing that evening.

All of the people from all of the villages turned up to see the Ogre perform his new song.

Ossi played the Vesh Django and the Ogre started to sing;

‘Look at me I used to be a sleepy top, now I’m doing Ogre pop’

‘I can sing and I can dance, I’ve even got pop star pants’

‘Look at me I don’t chase sheeps or the farmer’s tractor’

‘Because I’ve got the Ogre factor’

When the Ogre finished singing he and Ossi bowed as all of the people watching clapped and cheered.

Afterwards the farmer asked the Ogre why he used to chase everyone. The Ogre said ‘I was just bored, but now I’ve gotted musics and frienders I don’t have to chase peoples or animals anymore.
